Here's the second drawing I did based on Mike Mignola's Hellboy. I love ancient Egypt, so that was basically the theme with this one.

Usually part of the appeal of Hellboy, for me, is the 2Dish black and flat colour look of Mignola's style and I rarely think he looks as good when adapted by another artist, but I have to say this is great stuff; you get the essence of the character, but manage to do it your way. Best I've seen - thanks for sharing.

thanx. I love Mignola's art & characters. He definitely does the best version of his own Hellboy in my opinion too. It was great to hear compliments on this drawing from him and the president of DH.

Very nice! It's as if HB is saying "F you!" with his gun up like that.

The design in the BG is a little misplaced to me. It looks Celtic. Did you intend it to look this way or is it supposed to be tentacles?

I wanted a bold and simple design in the background... the middle edges form a simple Cleopatra type eye. thanx:)

Another incredible piece! Stunning work.

Do you use Bristol Board for these? How large is the original?

The inking on the crown of the Egyptian Pharaoh statue looks like the linework style used in the Dore prints. I haven't been able to copy that effectively using Microns so to say I'm impressed is really really an understatement. Also, I'm really trying to figure out how you did that hatching on Hellboy's chest. I'm guessing it might be layered hatching but I'm not certain.

thanx! Yeah, it's on 11 x17 bristol board. Many people have noted my ink work reminds them of Dore's woodblock prints, though his work wasn't really an influence on my art.
Hellboy's chest is shade with lines all going down to the left, toward the light source.

Yeah, I use Bristol Board as well. Love it!

Did you hatch over Hellboy's chest more than once in the darker areas? Did you use an X-style crosshatch to create the form in his chest?

Also, I noticed there are cracks, white lines through the hatching on the statues. May I ask how you created this effect? Did you draw the cracks with pencil lines and stop your pen whenever you came to them, then erasing the pencils later? That's the only way I could think of, but even then it would be hard to create such a great effect that way.

I'm sorry for all the questions (and thanks for your answers). I'm genuinely amazed with your technique and would love to learn more about it. Micron pens/inkwork is my favorite medium and I do many illustrations in it, though I am nowhere near your level of skill. :)

On Hellboy's chest, it's just lines going down to the left in one way. You can see it a little in the first detail.
Yeah, I did stop my pen and leave white spaces on the cracks in the statue. You could also use opaque white paint to do a similar effect and get the white spaces.
thanx!

Great! I really appreciate your responses to all my questions. I'm going to try to use what you taught me on my next ink illustration. Thanks so much! (And apologies in advance if I ask more in the near future!)
